NYC Runner’s :TRAIL GUIDE

NYCtrailguide_headerJust because we live in a cement jungle, doesn’t mean green stuff doesn’t exist–we promise. There are plenty of trails to explore an hour or more from NYC, but if you’re looking for a closer-to-home adventure, we’ve got you covered. Check out our map below with 6 of our recommended spots to put in some nature miles.

The trails from easiest to most difficult:

Forest Park, Queens: 30-45 minutes from Midtown. Embrace the rolling hills in this nature-filled oasis between Queens and Brooklyn. Three main trails range from 1-3 miles long on the Eastern side of the park.

Central Park, Manhattan: In Midtown. Conquer the hills of our city on the 1.5 mile Reservoir Path or one of two Bridle Path loops at 1.66 and 2.5 miles around. These are great to tack onto a run close to home for a taste of greenery.

Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, New York: 60 minutes from Midtown. The entire trail runs 26 miles (from Yonkers to Croton Dam), and you’ll run through towns with plenty of places to stop for snacks or park a car. Not super technical, it follows a rail and lets you cover a lot of ground without pounding pavement.

Inwood Hills Park, Bronx: 35-40 minutes from Midtown. For a true in-city trail, this 2 mile loop starts out on paved paths near ball fields. After a few stairs, you’re in a leafy wonderland. Easily add onto your run by exploring the Riverside Path along the Hudson.

Van Cortlandt, Bronx: 60 minutes from Midtown. NYC’s third largest park, it dedicates a 1.25 mile and a 3 mile path to runners, along with hiking trails to journey.

Palisades Interstate Park, New Jersey: 90 minutes from Midtown. Put in a long run starting in the city, running the bridge and entering the trails or start near the Englewood Cliffs boat basin to park and run. There are multiple trails, including an 11-miler, that are accessible from here and they include hills, stairs, a boulder field and some challenging ascents.

If you want a group to run trails with, join the Paragon Trail Run 5k or 10k featuring Salomon at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 18 in Van Cortlandt Park! We will have two vans for up to 25 people to get a round-trip ride from Paragon Sports in Union Square at 8:15 a.m. RSVP to ocheng@paragonsports.com. You’re welcome to meet us there to run the workout, as well. **Bag check, post-run coffee and sweets will be available.

Paragon Long Runs – 8/24/13

Paragoners,

Nice little thunder and lightning show this AM, no?  This weekend we are headed to the Dirty … that would be New Jersey.  We’re heading over the GW Bridge and into Palisades Park for the first of what will be 3 trips over there in the coming months.  There is a 14 (Just over the GW and back)  and 18 mile (Bridge & Palisades Park section) option this weekend. The weather looks like it will be solid.

Now for these NJ runs, if you have a friend, loved one or a passerby that you can coax into coming out with us that early in the AM get in touch with me.  Car, bike or willing to hang out at a Starbucks for an hour or two would be awesome.  Having a little extra help goes a long, long way.

As per usual, please RSVP for the run and let us know which distance you are going for.

Have a great rest of the week and I will see you this Saturday bright and early!!!

Paragon Long Runs – 8/17/13

Paragoners,

The weekend is nearly upon us, which means it is time to start thinking about long run plans!!! I know this weekend is NYRR Long Run #2 and lots of people do that, but we have an alternative for those that wish to get it over with Saturday AM.  This weekend we have a 13 & 17 mile option going from Central Park through Riverside Park and on up to Van Cortlandt Park … that’s right people, we are going to where the 1-train comes to an END.  It will be a nice early 7am start once again.  There are bathrooms and water stops pretty much all the way, except for a small stretch up Broadway to VCP, which does have bathrooms and water, etc.

Bring a few bucks with you so you can grab breakfast before jumping on the 1-Train back home.  This is a sweet run, one that I haven’t done in a few years, so I’m looking forward to it.

As per usual, please RSVP at speedysasquatch@gmail.com for the run and let us know which distance you are going for.

Have a great rest of the week and I will see you this Saturday bright and early!!!

Paragon Saturday Long Runs 8/3/13

Paragoners,

What’s going on everyone?  The weather is being so kind to us … a little drizzle today is gonna make it awesome!  So, this weekend, a little deja-vu with the distances for our long run, but the week has been light and so we get another shot at this one before we continue to climb the mileage ladder.  This weekend, and next, our routes are hitting Summer Streets.  Now because I have athletes running Team Champs on Saturday I’m being a little selfish on the starting and finishing point, but it’s a solid course regardless.

As per usual, please RSVP for the run and let us know which distance you are going for.

Have a great rest of the week and I will see you this Saturday bright and early!!!

JOIN a winter workout with Josh this Saturday

Paragoners,

I just wanted to send an email out since I will be doing more form and mechanics work this weekend for those that are interested.  This is NOT a regular Paragon run, just one that I am doing with some of the members of my Team focusing on the stuff we worked on last weekend and applying it to a bit more running.

If you’re interested in coming out just give me a shout.  We’ll be at Tavern on the Green at 10am on Saturday.
